Ruben Amorim is under increasing pressure as Manchester United’s manager, after another frustrating defeat – this time at the hands of Nottingham Forest. With the loss, United have now suffered 13 defeats in the Premier League this season, just one shy of their all-time record of 14 set in the 2023-24 campaign.
In a post-match interview, Amorim did not mince words. The 39-year-old coach, who was appointed in November 2024, acknowledged the immense pressure on his shoulders. “In Manchester United, you don’t have the time,” he remarked, making it clear that rapid improvement was essential. “I will not have the time. We have to get it right fast.”
The loss to Forest, where former United player Anthony Elanga scored the only goal, further solidified the pressure surrounding Amorim. Despite controlling large portions of the game – especially in the second half – Amorim admitted that his team struggled in front of goal. “Even with that, we controlled the game quite well, especially in the second half. We pushed forward but again, in the final third, we were not good enough,” he said.
One of the standout issues during the match was Alejandro Garnacho’s inability to convert chances. The young Argentine had six of United's 24 shots but failed to properly test Forest's goalkeeper, Matz Sels. However, Amorim was quick to defend his player, emphasizing Garnacho’s dedication to the team. "He's trying. Sometimes you have one day where you’re doing the right things, but in the final third, you're not that good. That can happen,” Amorim explained. “The most important thing is when he needs to run back, he is running back.”
This post-match speech from Amorim is just the latest in a series of similar comments throughout the season. Over the past few months, the manager has repeatedly acknowledged the team's struggles, highlighting his lack of time to turn things around. “We start the game suffering a goal and put Nottingham in the place they want to be—defending with lots of men. They have really fast players to make transitions,” Amorim noted. “We have to fix these things fast.”
Unfortunately for Amorim, time is not a luxury he enjoys, and the pressure has been building since he took charge. With United currently languishing in 13th place in the Premier League, a string of poor results has left the fanbase restless. Amorim's tenure at Sporting CP was filled with success, yet replicating that magic at United has proven more difficult than anticipated.
The loss to Nottingham Forest is far from an isolated incident. In fact, this is Amorim's sixth defeat in just 11 games in charge, leaving many to question whether he has the time to turn things around. United fans have grown impatient, and whispers of managerial changes are starting to emerge. But Amorim’s resolve remains unchanged – his focus is on improving results, regardless of the ticking clock.
As United continues to struggle, Amorim’s words ring louder: “We must fix this fast. We don't have the time.” The question remains – will the manager have enough time to make the necessary changes, or will his tenure at Manchester United be cut short? Only time will tell.
