Who has more fans—Ronaldo or Messi? Which countries have the most Ronaldo fans, and which ones have the most Messi fans?

In this article, we'll analyze real data from Google Trends, a platform that tracks online searches worldwide. Since people search for what they love and support, this data can give us a clear answer: Who has more fans—Ronaldo or Messi?

First, we will see how popular each player is around the world. Then, we’ll compare the countries where each player has the most fans. To get fresh information, we’ll only look at trends from 2020 to 2025 to see who has been searched the most over the past five years. We will also check only YouTube data.

CRISTIANO RONALDO'S GOOGLE TRENDS DATA

Let’s start with Ronaldo. As shown in the graph, between August 18 and 24, 2024, he had a lot of attention worldwide because of a few big events:

Launch of His Official YouTube Channel: On August 21, 2024, Ronaldo started his official YouTube channel. It became popular quickly, with over 10 million subscribers in just one day.

Saudi Super Cup Final: On August 22, 2024, Ronaldo played in the Saudi Super Cup final with Al-Nassr against Al-Hilal. Even though Ronaldo scored the first goal, Al-Nassr lost 4-1.

Now let’s look at Messi. As shown in the graph, Messi also had two major global events that made him very popular:

August 8-14, 2021 – Leaving FC Barcelona and Joining PSG: On August 8, 2021, Messi announced he was leaving Barcelona after more than 20 years. It was an emotional moment for him. A few days later, he signed a contract with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).

December 18-24, 2022 – Winning the FIFA World Cup: On December 18, 2022, Messi led Argentina to victory in the World Cup in Qatar. He scored two goals in the final, and Argentina won 4-2 in a penalty shootout after a 3-3 draw. This was a huge moment in his career.

Let’s compare Ronaldo and Messi’s fanbases. As shown in the graph, Ronaldo has generally attracted more attention than Messi, except for two times:

1. When Messi was moving to PSG.

2. When Messi won the World Cup.

But after these events, Ronaldo got the biggest attention when he launched his YouTube channel, with interest reaching 90% more than Messi during that time.

And now let’s see Country-Based Popularity. As you can see here, Google Trends provides data from 83 countries, and this is the available data at the moment. However, Messi has more fans than Ronaldo in only 9 out of 83 countries, from Rank 1 his nation Argentina to Rank 9 Bolivia. They got the same percentage in Senegal & Chile. On the other hand, Ronaldo has more fans than Messi in 72 countries, from 12th to 83rd, which is far more than the 9 countries where Messi leads, making up 86.75% of the available 83 countries. So, based on this data, it is now clear that Ronaldo has more fans than Messi in recent years.
